Saint Louis, MO – Robin Carnahan released the following statement today regarding the announcement of the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform – a bipartisan commission designed to address the growing national debt:

Unfortunately, Congress has shown an unwillingness to make tough decisions when it comes to getting a handle on our long-term deficit, so a bipartisan debt commission is a commonsense step that I hope will force Washington to get serious about cutting spending.

But deficit spending has been around for a long time in Washington, and both Republicans and Democrats share responsibility.

Despite all his recent talk about deficit spending, Missourians should know that as one of the top leaders in Congress, Congressman Blunt helped turn a $128 billion surplus into a $1.2 trillion deficit. Year after year, he supported wasteful government spending, earmarks and favors for corporate special interests.  And just this year he opposed a commonsense “pay-as-you-go” measure to rein in spending. Just like most Missourians, for me, actions speak louder than words.
