Keeping America Safe & Strong
The most solemn responsibility of our government is to protect and defend its citizens from harm. Today, as America faces two wars abroad and continued threats to its communities and critical infrastructure here at home, it is more important than ever that our leaders are focused on policies that keep America safe and strong. Robin Carnahan is committed to a strong national security policy that strengthens our military, bolsters our international alliances, and protects our families and communities. She’ll work to:
- Maintain reliable funding for military & veterans benefits: Too often, partisan bickering in Congress has resulted in delayed funding for the services and benefits our veterans need. Robin believes there is no room for politics when it comes to providing our men and women in uniform with the training and equipment they need when they are abroad as well as the financial security and benefits they deserve when they return home.
- Enhance military readiness: While our first priority must be on the weapons, equipment and training that our troops need today to fight the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, Robin believes we must also improve our military’s ability to respond quickly to new, unconventional crises elsewhere in the world.
- Defeat the terrorists in Afghanistan and Pakistan: Robin believes that refocusing America’s resources on defeating the terrorists who attacked us on 9/11 was long overdue. With Osama bin Laden still at large, a flourishing drug trade and an escalating insurgency, the stakes in this volatile region are higher than ever. Robin has no doubt that our world-class military and intelligence services are up to the challenge but with American lives at stake, our leaders must ensure we have clear goals and a clear strategy to achieve them. Robin is also committed to real, measurable benchmarks for success and strict oversight.
- Support and protect our troops and bring our military commitment in Iraq to an end honorably and responsibly. Robin believes that we need to combat terrorism on its front lines: Afghanistan and Pakistan. In order to focus our efforts on defeating terrorists where they are organizing, we need to push the Iraqi government to stand on its own. Our troops there have served us bravely and with honor and we need to support and protect them by bringing to an end our military commitment in Iraq in a measured and responsible way. This is the best policy for U.S. national security, is the best policy for the Iraqi people, and will allow us to focus our resources on the real threats of terrorism in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and other hot spots in the region.
- Stand up to hostile regimes: The continued aggression and nuclear ambitions of regimes like Iran and North Korea must not be permitted. Robin believes all options should be on the table and supports strengthening economic sanctions and working closely with our allies to exert increasing pressure—diplomatically, economically, and politically – on these regimes to abandon their illicit nuclear programs and become legitimate members of the international community.
- Free America from foreign oil: America’s dependence on foreign oil is hurting our economy, harming our environment and threatening our national security. The U.S. will be compromised as long as it remains beholden to oil-producing and often anti-democratic regimes. Freeing us from this unhealthy dependence is one of Robin’s top priorities. She will work aggressively in the Senate to increase renewable homegrown energy production and move us toward a new clean energy economy that will create new jobs and businesses and strengthen our national security.
